Note: Because of the varied coding used to display the images, we have not been able to obtain formats for some images that will display on small screens.  For this reason, it will not be possible to view some parts of pages on mobile phones and small tablets, although you may be able see these parts by selecting the “Desktop site” display in the browser settings. From our testing we found that the pages may display on an 8″ tablet in the landscape mode and will display correctly on a 10″ screen.

Some of the animated graphics, found on the pages, use code which is not always supported by all browsers. We have done extensive testing of several browsers with desktop computers running on Windows 7, Windows 10, Windows 11 and Linux and on mobile devices running on Android and found that Chrome and Firefox are the leaders in adopting compliance with the latest versions of HTML5 and CSS3. Google Chrome is based on their open-source Chromium and uses the Blink browser engine. The latest Microsoft Edge browser is also based on Chromium and performs similarly to Chrome. Mozilla’s Firefox uses their Gecko browser engine. Chrome performs best in HTML5 and Firefox best in CSS3. In terms of graphics display, Firefox seems to have an edge because, apart from better performance with CSS, issues with HTML recognition do not seem to affect the graphics display as much as issues with CSS.

The Opera, Iron, Vivaldi and the second version of Edge are all based on Chromium and use the Blink engine, so perform similarly. However, they may at times be slightly behind Chrome in performance.

Internet Explorer 11 was the only remaining version of this browser supported by Microsoft until 2020. It did not support many of the animated SVG graphics and several other clock graphics on the pages. Microsoft Edge, which was only available with Windows 10 did improve HTML recognition compared with Internet Explorer 11, could display most of the the animated SVG graphics, but fell behind with CSS recognition.

In summary, with Windows, we encourage you to use the latest version of a browser, such as Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Vivaldi, Iron, or the latest Chromium-base Edge browser to view the clock graphics on these pages.

We have not tested with Apple products, but found that the old discontinued Safari browser version 5.1.7 (2012 vintage) on Windows 7 was able to run almost all of the SVG graphics, but failed with several CSS graphics. We expect that a Macintosh running recent software should be able to display most of the graphics well.

TIMELY QUOTATIONS

When I do count the clock that tells the time, And see the brave day sunk in hideous night; When I behold the violet past prime, And sable curls all silver'd o'er with white; When lofty trees I see barren of leaves Which erst from heat did canopy the herd, And summer's green all girded up in sheaves Borne on the bier with white and bristly beard, Then of thy beauty do I question make, That thou among the wastes of time must go, Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsake And die as fast as they see others grow; And nothing 'gainst Time's scythe can make defence Save breed, to brave him when he takes thee hence.
- William Shakespeare, Sonnet 12, 1609.
